Radio Static

I have to admit that it's been nice to have a break from blogging. I'm not 100% sold on giving it up entirely, but I will be staying off of the airwaves for a bit longer. In the meantime, feel free to follow me on twitter (@jencroken) and Instagram (jencroken) for my current project. I've joined a challenge to post a daily photo of something that makes you happy for 100 days. You can search for others using #100happydays.
Feel free to join in on the fun!

If you want to keep in the loop regarding my return to this blog, feel free to sign up for automatic updates.

Until I write again..........................

Blog Break

I've got a million and one things to take care of this week and had to priorotize.
Sadly, that means no posting until next week.
This weekend is Remembrance Day in Canada, so I will return on Tuesday.

Until then, Lest We Forget.

Sweet Sounds

I've been on the road a lot lately, so my post today is light.
Here's a great cold-weather song that I heard on the way home. Appropriate for the weather change that we're experiencing!

I Am Woman.....

Hear me roar.
I recently saw ads for the UN that highlight some pretty severe Women's Rights issues and also break my heart.
I stumbled upon them via theguardian.com
Read the UN site here: http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2013/10/women-should-ads

Although I understand that these only highlight some of the opinions of the world, it still angers me. It angers me because I experience these opinions. As a 33 year old Canadian woman, I still hear some of those comments.

Wtf, world?
If I had a nickle for every time that I heard a man say "a woman only belongs in the kitchen", I would have enough money to build a state-of-the-art culinary masterpiece of a kitchen..............and hire a man to cook for me.

Because I am a woman, I have heard some of these beliefs thinly veiled as jokes.
Because I am a woman, I have had not one, but two men grab me between the legs without my permission. Both were personal acquaintances.
Because I am a woman, I have been warned not to "have too much fun" in case I "get myself into trouble". I'm pretty sure that men don't often hear that warning.
Because I am a woman, I have been told that my opinions do not matter.
Because I am a woman, I have had condescending responses to business communication, hearing comments such as "Well, wasn't that a professional little voice mail.".
Because I am a woman, I've been dismissed by mechanics when reporting car problems because I drive a stick shift and they are convinced that I just don't know what I am doing.
Because I am a woman, men feel the need to tell me how to operate my own vehicle, which I have owned for six years.
Because I am a woman, I am shamed for not being a size 0.
Because I am a woman, I get paid less than men.
Because I am a feminist, I am often labelled as a nuisance or expected to preach my beliefs.

Because I am a woman, I am strong.
Because I am a woman, I develop beautiful, meaningful relationships with people in my life.
Because I am a woman, I work in supportive roles and help people
Because I am a woman, I can model self-respecting behaviour.
Because I am a woman in this century, I can vote, drive, and choose. I don't take those rights lightly.
Because I am a woman, I can choose to create life.
Because I am a woman, I can choose to grow from my experiences, positive and negative, and develop the strength to not allow them to happen again.
Because I am a woman, I can be both beautiful and powerful.
Because I am a woman, I can advocate for others rights.
Because I am a woman, I am empowered and can provide for myself.
Because I am a woman, I can break the cycle and strive for equal rights.
Because I am a woman, I can be a feminist who wears heels, makeup and dresses and believes in people's rights and support women whether they choose to be stay-at-home parents or corporate professionals. I support their right to choose their own path.

For Your Friday

I stumbled upon this video after finding a Pinterest Board titled "Don't Compare Yourself to Celebrities" that is well worth a peek.
Seriously, click that link. Don't worry - I'll still be here when you're finished reading.

The creator of said board explained her motivation in a blog post, found here:
http://indyink.wordpress.com/2013/05/05/the-beautiful-people-the-story-behind-dont-compare-yourself-to-celebrities-part-1/

And I loved this letter, written by a former weight loss consultant:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/iris-higgins/an-open-apology-to-all-of_b_3762714.html

What I really want to share with you on this Friday is a video from upworthyhttp://www.upworthy.com/see-why-we-have-an-absolutely-ridiculous-standard-of-beauty-in-just-37-seconds
Seriously? What started out as an attractive model/human being turned into a stretched and "whitened" cyborg.

Remember that the next time you see an ad and wish that you looked like that. The person that you're comparing yourself to doesn't even look like that.

You're beautiful and amazing and I love you.

Happy Halloween!

It's time for my annual posting of the Thriller video.
It's not Halloween unless your hear Vincent Price narrate Thriller!
Every year, this post takes 13 minutes and 43 seconds longer to write than any other post because I have to watch the video.

"Darkenss fall across the land............................."

Morgan Freeman, Imma let you finish, but Vincent Price is the best Halloween narrator of all time.

Happy Halloween!

Getting Ready for Halloween

Here's a peek into my Halloween decorating efforts. I randomly shopped at Michael's and Shoppers and bought decor at 60 - 70% off.
I LOVE Halloween!
I stuck mainly to the entry-way and used a lot of black:
The black skull is actually a glittery candle that I found for 99 cents, and hte glittery spiders were 10 for $1.
I already had the owl and the votive holder as 99 cents.

Skulls and spiders and boas, oh my!
I also took inspiration from something that I saw on Pinterest and created window monsters:

Decisions, Decisions.

I am incredibly unfocused today.
I haven't even shared my last trip with you and I am potentially planning another.

I have the opportunity to travel to Thailand with a friend and I can't decide if I am going. Mainly, I am focused on the cost, but I can't help but think of the opportunity.

Thailand is one of my dream trips (that I haven't taken yet). Funny - in three years I went from someone who hasn't travelled much outside Canada to someone who could potentially have visited England, Scotland, Spain, New York, Tokyo (for a couple nights), Thailand and Ireland in just over a year.

Go big or go home.

So,
I am left to wrestle with my decision. I can manage the cost of the trip, however, I don't have enough vacation time for this one. I can't borrow from my next contract so I will possibly be going on time without pay. That's what scares me the most.

I'm terrified, excited and tired. Like a child before Christmas.

I will keep you posted.

Start Spreading the News

I'm leaving.............tomorrow.

I'm gonna be a part of it, New York, New York!

I'm taking a little blog break for a vacation to NYC. I can't wait to fill you in on my adventures.

For now, enjoy a few NewYork-themed songs:

I also expect to have at least one NYC "Selfie" :

Until next time, my friends.
Stay classy.
